UCLA was founded in 1882 after the California State Legislature established a southern branch of the California State Normal School (now San Jose State University) in response to the growing need for trained teachers in Southern California. Originally located in the central branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, this normal school later became a flagship campus of the University of California system.

Today, UCLA offers a wide range of academic programs. Students can major in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Statistics, Art History, English Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Asian Languages and Cultures, Comparative Literature, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Psychology, Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology, Integrative Biology and Physiology or Anthropology.

But beyond these academic programs, UCLA is also home to the American Language Center (ALC), the largest language training center in the Los Angeles area. In addition to English training courses, ALC also offers a range of certificate programs to help students choose the most practical courses.

The English training courses at ALC focus on two main areas: Practical English and Academic Intensive English. Practical English has three levels, and students attend classes four days a week, from Monday to Thursday, for a total of 20 hours per week. The course is aimed at helping students improve their listening and speaking skills, and is suitable for those aged 17 and above. On the other hand, Academic Intensive English has seven levels and is available for a period of ten weeks. However, there are also six-week courses available during the summer. This program is designed for students who want to continue their studies in the United States or for those who want to improve their reading and writing skills. Classes are held Monday to Friday, and students attend 23 hours of classes per week.

In addition to the main courses, both Practical English and Academic Intensive English offer a range of elective courses, including TOEFL Preparation, Current Events, Movie English, American Slang, Business Communication, and Accent Modification. The specific elective courses available will depend on each student's language proficiency.

UCLA's emblem features a book, a pentagram, and a ribbon with the school motto "Let there be Light." The pentagram radiates light down to the book with the words "University of California" and "UCLA" encircling it.
